The film originally aired as a three-hour CBS mini-series on December 4 and 7, 2005, starring Academy Award- and Golden Globe-winning actor John Voight, who was nominated for an Emmy for his remarkable performance in the film. This movie was made in cooperation with the Vatican and received a blessing from Pope Benedict XVI.

Ignatius Press, one of the largest Catholic publishers in the United States, now has exclusive rights for distributing the DVD version of this monumental film that has never before been seen in theaters. And that’s where you come in.

Ignatius Press is coordinating the release of the DVD in conjunction with the second-ever Ignatius Night at the Movies. The first and highly successful Ignatius Night at the Movies took place just this past February with the premiere of The Passion of Bernadette. Many parishes, shrines, schools and universities across the United States and Canada participated in the momentous event.

Now you can once again, or for the first time, be a part of this incredible opportunity to reach out to and spiritually inspire your members, students, and the surrounding community by teaching the truths of the Catholic faith, and educating about the life and times of this most extraordinary man. At the same time, this can be a marvelous fundraising opportunity for you.

You will be among the first to premier this amazing film on the “big” screen—right in your own church, school or center. This epic movie takes the viewer into the life of Karol Wojtyla, from his youth in Poland through his final days in Rome on the Chair of St. Peter. In addition to Voight’s widely acclaimed performance as the older Pope John Paul II, Cary Elwes (The Princess Bride, Glory) gives a remarkable portrayal of the younger Wojtyla. Other notables include Ben Gazzara, James Cromwell, and Christopher Lee.

Pope John Paul II , filmed on location in Krakow, Poland and Rome, brings the amazing story of Karol Wojtyla up close and personal, from his struggles in Nazi-occupied Poland to his dealings with the Russians and their desire to turn his beloved homeland into a godless society; from his education in the underground seminary to his election, at the age of 58, as the first non-Italian pope in 455 years; from his athletic, theatrical youth to his physically depleted old age, to his moving and dignified death. This movie portrays it all in a way never before seen with a remarkable glimpse into the inner sanctum of the Vatican conclave and the making of a pope. It will move the viewer to laugh, cry and be awed by the privilege of sharing the earth for a brief time with this saintly man.

Once you decide to host an Ignatius Night at the Movies at your facility, Ignatius will provide you with a packet of materials to ensure a successful event, including:

You can either sell tickets for the event (you set your own prices), or you can take up a collection of donations at the event. You retain all the funds you make for the showing of this film.
