Challenging New Books
15% off all titles listed

Life as a Catholic in the modern world is a life of challenge. The teaching of the Church is called to use the modern language of what is happening around us, either in our own country or abroad. These new books help us to see modern realities that call us to respond to these modern realities as Catholics, and educate us to to also call others to respond. The modern day realities addressed here are those that challenge the culture of life our Church teaches: from abortion to anti-semitism; from social and economic justice to liturgical reform; and the challenge of Islam and the genocide committed in Rwanda.

Hell and Other Destinations
Piers Paul Read
The famous British novelist and playwright Piers Paul Read presents his lively reflections on wide ranging spiritual topics with his usual brilliance. When this best-selling writer turns his attention to his Catholic Faith, as well as to religious and cultural issues of our times, he brings delight and inspiration, as well as some objections and controversy.

Handing on the Faith in an Age of Disbelief
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

Why is it hard to transmit the Catholic faith today? What obstacles hinder modern men, women, and children from responding to the Gospel? Can science, technology, and mass media go hand in hand with Christianity? Are new teaching methods effective in catechesis? How can the Church do a better job giving her precious patrimony to subsequent generations?

Left to Tell
Immaculee Ilibagiza

With uncommon sincerity, Immaculee shares with us her soul's struggle through disbelief and to anger and, ultimately, forgiveness. She is living proof of the power of prayer and positive thinking.
Her story will touch you deeply. You will feel her fear, you will cry, and you will ask yourself the same questions that people have been asking: How could this happen? Where does animosity come from? Why can't we just be like God, Who is the Source for all of us? But you will also feel something profound: You will feel hope that we, as a people, are moving toward living God-realized lives.

Images of Hope
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger
In Images of Hope: Meditations on Major Feasts, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (now Pope Benedict XVI) masterfully weaves together Scripture, history, literature and theology as he reflects on major feasts of the liturgical calendar. In each chapter, he examines works of sacred art that illustrate the hope we celebrate in our most important Christian holy days.

Heresy of Formlessness
Martin Mosebach

Three Approaches to Abortion
Peter Kreeft

Christian Resistance to Anti-Semitism
Henri de Lubac

Introduction To Catholic Social Teaching: Study Guide

The Bible and the Qur'an
Jacques Jomier

Sex and the Marriage Convenant
John F. Kippley

Humanae Vitae
July 25 marks the 38th anniversary of Pope Paul VI's encyclical, Humanae Vitae, which reaffirmed the Church's constant and universal teaching on marriage, especially the necessity that each and every marital act remain open to human life (Humanae Vitae, no. 11) and that contraceptive acts are contrary to the moral law (Humanae Vitae, no. 14).

The encyclical said nothing new. Pope Paul VI spoke "the truth in love" to millions of people who desperately needed to hear the truth.

Before John Paul II's "Theology of the Body", there was Pope Paul VI's encyclical, Humanae Vitae. Read the encyclical yourself, in Ignatius Press' outstanding translation, based on the original Italian text and including a comparison to the official Latin text where there are notable differences between the Italian and Latin versions of the encyclical.

Why Humanae Vitae was Right
You'll also want to get a copy of Janet Smith's Why Humanae Vitae Was Right, a collection of outstanding essays about the important and history-making encyclical. This is a "must-read" book for anyone who wants to understand the liberating truth of Humanae Vitae.

MOVIES

Mother Teresa
A new movie on the life of Mother Teresa starring award-winning actress Olivia Hussey (Jesus of Nazareth, The Jeweller's Shop). Hussey gives an illuminating performance as the saintly missionary nun who brought hope to the poorest of the poor everywhere. The film portrays the muti-faceted character of Mother Teresa: her being a shrewd diplomat, a determined missionary, a fearless superior, a deeply compassionate servant of the poor and a holy bride of Christ. Praised by the Missionaries of Charity as an accurate, loving portrayal of their foundress, the Movie Reporter called it “the most spiritually uplifting film since The Passion of the Christ”.

Footprints of God: David and Solomon
Why is Jesus called the Son of David and why is that important to understanding Our Lord? How did the Kingdom of Israel prefigure the Kingdom of God and the Catholic Church? Join Steve Ray in this edition from the Footprints of God series as he takes you on a adventure through the mountains and deserts of Israel to discover not only where David and Solomon lived and reigned, but also the meaning of their lives and kingdoms. Also available on VHS
