Special Affiliate News from Ignatius Press
Dear Friends of Ignatius Press,
You may have read in the
newspaper or online that Pope Benedict XVI, in his newly released
document Sacramentum Caritatis, has called for a restoration of
"the Latin Mass". Well, that's not exactly true—not that you will be
shocked by yet another media inaccuracy about the Catholic Church.
Contrary to what many
people think, the Roman Rite can be celebrated in Latin
without any special permission. What the Holy Father has
called for is greater use of Latin in the Sacred Liturgy, which can
include celebrations in which most of the Liturgy is in the
vernacular. He asks that "the better-known
prayers of the Church's tradition should be recited in Latin and,
if possible, selections of Gregorian chant should be
sung."
"Speaking more generally," he continues, "I ask that
future priests, from their time in the seminary, receive the preparation
needed to understand and to celebrate Mass in Latin, and also to use
Latin texts and execute Gregorian chant; nor should we forget that the
faithful can be taught to recite the more common prayers in Latin, and
also to sing parts of the liturgy to Gregorian chant" (Sacramentum
Caritatis, no. 62).
Clearly, the Holy Father would like to help the whole
faithful—clergy and laity—recover a sense of the Latin tradition in the
Liturgy. That doesn't mean abolishing the use of the vernacular;
it means learning key Latin prayers and liturgical responses so
that, whether the Mass is celebrated entirely in Latin or mostly in the
vernacular, people can participate using the Latin prayers and
liturgical responses when it is envisioned that they do so.
Recovering a sense of the
Latin tradition in the Sacred Liturgy is an important goal, one that
Ignatius Press wants to help the Holy Father achieve. Which is why we
publish a booklet called The Mass of Vatican
II.
Why The Mass of Vatican II? Because this
booklet contains the order of the Mass, as promulgated by Pope Paul VI
in 1969 in light of the Council's teaching, and in the form clearly
envisioned by the Fathers of the Council in the Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy (Sacrosanctum Concilium). Yes, there
is room for the vernacular. But this booklet also
respects Vatican II's desire "that the faithful ... also be
able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the ordinary
[the unchanging parts] of the Mass which pertain to them (no.
54).
The Mass of Vatican II also contains
traditional Gregorian chant settings for both the Order of Mass itself
and the Ordinary chants—something else in which the Holy Father wants
the faithful to be able to participate. As Vatican II stated, "The
Church acknowledges Gregorian chant as specially suited to the Roman
liturgy: therefore, other things being equal, it should be given pride
of place in liturgical services" (Sacrosanctum Concilium, no.
116).
The Mass of Vatican II booklet features Latin
texts of the Church's Liturgy, but it also includes an unofficial
English translation as an aid to understanding the Latin. The Latin
prayers and responses of the booklet require no special permission to be
used in the Liturgy—they are the already-approved Latin text of the
Mass.
We think The Mass
of Vatican II booklet is so helpful to the faithful in learning the
basic prayers and responses of the Sacred Liturgy in Latin that we make
it available on a low-cost basis. To get your copy of The Mass of
Vatican II or to order copies for group use, click here.
