Book Review

"Service, Service, Service: A Secret
Weapon for Your Growing Business", by
Steve Albrecht, is a book of expert
advice for small business.

Inculturating the Catholic faith in the
culture of the business world is very
difficult. However, there is a tradition
in the Church that can serve as an entry
point for placing the Catholic spirit in
business culture: service. And this is
the aspect that is tackled by many in the
business world: that of being customer
oriented and being of service excellence
to one's business clients.

What does service mean?
In Catholic tradition, the concept of service is realized
in many religious institutions: like schools which give
education, orphanages which serves parents who want to
adopt children, houses of refuge for those who have been
disgraced by a sexual relationship, and hospitals which
serve the sick and the wounded. Blessed Mother of Teresa
is even greater in her ideal of service when she even
places the element of charity in her service: that of
being with the poorest of the poor so that they may have
dignity in their life and in their death. And John Paul
II always reminds the people of his title as being
"servant of the servants of God".

The ideal of service can be lived out also in business.
This ideal can be made more practical when thinking in
terms also of serving in a way that will still make
the business profit. As we serve our customers and
clients, we are rewarded for our work by the generosity
of our selves and the commitment we give to helping
them get what they need and what they want. This
direction will reap in much more than what you really
expect out of the business. And many business
institutions thrive from the service ideal in business.
This service ideal is very successful and profitable
that even when the times get difficult and the
economy feels a recession, it is the service industries
that continue to survive and to thrive despite the
bad times because they live according to an ideal,
a vision, a mission: service, service, service.

This book review on the writing of Steve Albrecht
will help you with suggestions on how to live out
this service ideal in growing your small business.
It is a very good book filled with practical ideas
to help you find what would work for your own small
business. It is effective and will truly work if
you yourself believe in the ideal of service.

Faith in the ideal
What is important for a service institution to survive,
thrive and prosper, is to continue to have faith in its
ideal of wanting to serve its constituents: both the
employees and its customers and clients. And when the
faith is great in the vision and mission of serving,
there is an assurance that the business will continue.
For it is in the spirit of service that the business
derives one of its sources of life. Money and profit
are good things. And they are very rewarding and
fulfilling if we continue to obtain them. But it is
the spirit of service, especially a service with a
quality of excellence, that will really make the grade.
When we focus on the ideal, the ideal takes us into
avenues and highways that will reap in much more, so
much more, than we ever have imagined that our business
can do.
