Book Review

"A History of the Church"

Franzen and Dolan have much to teach us about Catholic Church history. From their interpretations and analyses, we can gain insight and find light shed on present moral problems and dilemmas. We can also gain understanding on why the Church is moving towards the direction she is moving now.

Introduction
Part of the Catholic articles in this web site are historical in nature. And one good book to have that will help in obtaining knowledge of Church history, is the book "A History of the Church", by August Franzen and John P. Dolan.

Finding wisdom from the past
The history of the Catholic Church is very colorful and creates much interest, especially for those who wish to understand how present systems in the Church have their roots and origins in the past. Also, for those seeking answers to contemporary issues, moral questions, and modern controversies, learning how leaders, popes, saints, and founders of institutes, solved similar situations and cases in their era, helps give insight and shed light to present problems and dilemmas. There is much to gain from the experience and wisdom of the past.

"A History of the Church"
"A History of the Church" by Franzen and Dolan, is a good book in Church history. The presentation of facts and details are well-organized and structured according to "eras". Below is a general outline of these eras (which are then further detailed in the book's Table of Contents).
  • First Era: Christian Antiquity [1-604 A.D.]
  • Second Era: The Church of the Middle Ages [604-1500 A.D.]
  • Third Era: The Church in the Modern Age [1500-1960s]
The "Eras" are then subdivided into "epochs", with each epoch highlighted by influential leaders (such as Constantine the Great, Gregory the Great, St. Benedict), significant events (such as the Eastern schism of 1054, Martin Luther and his protest, the Crusades), and great Church councils (such as Nicaea, Chalcedon, Trent, and Vatican II).

An objective history book
Like history books in general, this book on Catholic Church history also makes interpretations and analyses of important and significant Church events. The authors give justice to the objectivity of these events by presenting them in both its positive and negative meanings. This book is a good Church history book for starters. In learning the Catholic faith, placing it within its historical context will also help in understanding why the Catholic Church has grown to where she is now, and moving towards the direction we see her moving now.
