A collection of prayers to the Holy Spirit

IN EVERY NEED

Holy Spirit,
my light, my life, my love, my strength,
be with me now, and always:
in all my doubts, perplexities and trials,
come, Holy Spirit;
in hours of loneliness, weariness and grief,
come, Holy Spirit;
in failure and in loss, in disappointment,
come, Holy Spirit;
when others fail me, when I fail myself,
come, Holy Spirit;
when I am ill, unable to work, depressed,
come, Holy Spirit;
now, and forever, and in all things,
come, Holy Spirit.

THE SECRET OF SANCTITY

I am going to reveal to you a secret of sanctity of happiness. If every day during five, minutes, you will silence your imagination, close your eyes to things of sense, and your ears to, earthly sounds in order to enter into yourself and, there in the sanctuary of your baptized soul, which is the Temple of the Holy Ghost, speak to, this Divine Spirit saying:

O Holy Spirit, Soul of my soul, I adore You. Enlighten, guide, strengthen and console me; tell me what I should do; give me Your orders. I promise to be submissive in all that You desire of me and to accept all that You allow to happen to me. Grant only to me to know Your Will.

If you do this will pass your life happily, serene and consoled, even in the midst of pains, because grace will be in proportion to your trials giving you strength to bear them,. Thus you will arrive at the Gate of Heaven full of merit. This submission to the Holy Spirit is the secret of sanctity. (Cardinal Mercier)

For the presence of the Holy Spirit

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created. And you shall renew the face of the earth. Let us pray.
O God, who has taught the hearts of the faithful by the light of the Holy Spirit, grant that by the gift of the same Spirit we may be always truly wise and ever rejoice in his consolation. Amen.

A prayer for awakening

Holy Spirit, come like a mighty rushing wind and awaken us out of our complacency, our apathy, our indifference. Disturb us, for we are too content to let things go on as they are, and to let people go on not knowing you. Penetrate the closed gates of our hearts and makes us live again. O Holy Spirit, create among us a mighty Christian revolution and cast the fear of the unknown out of our lives. by Michael Hollings and Etta Gullick

Prayer attributed to the St. Isidore of Seville, 8th century

Here we are in front of you, Holy Spirit. We feel the burden of our infirmities, but we are united all together in your name: come to us, help us, enter into our hearts: teach us what we should do, the path to follow, do for us what you ask us to do. Be the only one to propose and guide our decisions, because only you, with the Father and the Son, have a name that is glorious and holy. Do not allow us to offend justice, You, who love order and peace, Don't let ignorance lead us astray, Don't let human sympathy bias us, Don't let people or office influence us. Keep us intimately close to you with the gift of your Grace, so that we may be only one thing with you, and nothing may separate us from the truth. Gathered in your Holy Name, may we be good and firm, so that all we do may be in harmony with you, awaiting that the faithful fulfillment of our duty may lead us to the eternal good. Amen.

A prayer for Spiritual Freedom

O Spirit of God, we ask you to help orient all our actions by your inspirations, carry them on by your gracious assistance, that every prayer and work of ours may always begin from you and through you be happily ended. from Hearts on Fire: Praying with Jesuits

From a Pentecost Novena

Who are you, sweet light, that fills me and illumines the darkness of my heart? You lead me like a mother's hand; and should you let go of me, I would not know how to take another step. You are the space that embraces my being and buries it in yourself. You, nearer to me than I to myself and more interior than my most interior:
Holy Spirit - eternal love!
Holy Spirit - eternal life!
Holy Spirit - ray that penetrates everything!
Holy Spirit - victorious power!
Holy Spirit - God's molding hand!
Holy Spirit - Creator of all! by Saint Edith Stein

To the Spirit of Light and Love

May the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Pentecost help you to clarify what is ambiguous, to give warmth to what is indifferent, to enlighten what is obscure, to be before the world true and generous witnesses of Christ's love, for no one can live without love. by Pope John Paul II

from the Byzantine liturgy

"Heavenly Sovereign, Paraclete, Spirit of truth who are present everywhere and who fill all, treasure chest of every good and giver of life, come, live in us, cleanse us of every stain and, you who are good, save our souls. Amen." [Troparion of the Pentecost Vespers]

from the Anaphora of the Twelve Apostles

"Lord, grant to us the gifts of the Holy Spirit, and render us worthy to approach the holy of holies with pure heart and with irreproachable consciences."

from the Armenian liturgy

"O Holy Spirit, true God, you who like a marvelous, life-giving fire descended upon the apostles in the Upper Room, bestow the gifts of your wisdom on us."

from the Serapion, Euchologion, 1

"I ask you, O Father, to send your Holy Spirit into our souls and to make us understand the Scriptures inspired by him. May we interpret them in a pure and worthy way so that all the faithful gathered here may profit."

from St. Alphonsus Liguori

Most Holy Spirit,
Guardian of the poor,
Comforter of the afflicted,
Light of hearts,
Sanctifier of souls;
Behold, I stand in your presence.
      You are the divine Spirit, give me courage against all evil spirits.
      You are fire; enkindle in me your love.
      You are light, enlighten my mind with the knowledge of things eternal.
      You are the dove, give me innocence of life.
      You are the gentle breeze, disperse the storms of my passions.
      You are the tongue, teach me how to bless you always.
      You are the cloud, shelter me under the shadow of your protection.
May I bless you, praise you, and love you,
first during this life on earth
and then in heaven and for all eternity.
Amen.
