PneumaNetics
PneumaNetics is a term used in the Internet by other Christians which this
website adopted to describe the process of prayer, study, and using internet
knowledge for inculturating the Gospel and Catholic spirituality in the Net.
The term can mean that the Spirit, "Pneuma" is part of the process and that
the "Netics" part involves a study of the Internet, its coding languages, and
the information culture in which those who use the Internet are immersed in.
PneumaNetics will always be an ongoing process of prayer, study, and
Internet work. Emphasis is on ongoing because everything in the Internet is
very dynamic. It is always updating itself with new methods, new technology,
and new techniques in its information and business activities. It is important
to learn the new technologies and techniques when interacting and relating
in an electronically interactive world. What is refreshing to know is that
although the world of the Web is ever-changing and constantly expanding, the
message of the Gospel remains as it has always been. For as the letter to
the Hebrews say, the Lord Jesus remains the same, yesterday, today and
forever [Hebrews 13:8]. With a stable and solid foundation in Scriptures,
the inculturation of the Gospel on the Net can be essentially rooted in a
bedrock of tradition that spans two millenia of Catholic wisdom. Although
the form of inculturating the Gospel is new, the message of the Gospel
that is handed down as a source of information and wisdom is essentially
the same all throughout our Christian history. It is thus important to know
how to integrate the Judaeo-Christian tradition we have inherited into the
information culture that we now have in the Internet. The convergence of
these two realities will come out with a way of proceeding in how to
interact as Catholics in the Internet and how to lead those who have an
interest to become Catholics, to seek a parish where they can inquire
about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults. There is a lot of prayer
and study to be done in this regard. Technical know-how is important but
without actual prayer and study, the message may not come out clearly well
and might be misunderstood by the Internet public.
If prayer and study is important, then the best sources for these are
the classics: those timeless teachings of the Church through the writings
of the saints and the spiritual masters of our Catholic heritage. The
spirituality of modern writers, especially those who are connected to
these classic spiritualities, can also be studied and become a source of
much reflective insight and wisdom. Both classic and modern spiritualities
shall make our Chrisitan living solid and stable. To get sources of these
classic writings, you can visit the page

. This is a page which
excerpts all the prayer and study that has been done in the online groups this
web site manages,
especially in
The Spirit's Love Leader's Corps.
One additional element that is well mentioning of is the importance
of the experimental process of PneumaNetics - the inculturation of the Gospel
on the Net. The mandate of the 36th World Communications Day was to "go out
into the deep of the Net to proclaim the gospel of Christ". This means really
going where the people are on the Internet. Although the Internet is a place
where the information-rich societies can access, in general anybody can use
the Internet. As long as you know how to get online, open a browser and type
a URL in the address line of the browser, then you can start venturing out
and be an 'apostle of the Net'. You will discover many web sites. There are
many web sites designed and built by people of all walks of life - Catholic,
Christian, or non-Christian. The missionary spirit inspired by the document
mentioned above impels one to go where these people are - at what level they
are at and knowing their language. This entails meeting so many different
personalities on the Net. But with a strongly inspired missionary spirit,
and this process of integrating the use of the internet in spreading the
Catholic faith, witnessing the Gospel to others on the Net involves a lot
of our selves - a lot of time for prayer, study, discernment and confirmation
of what effect it will have on Catholics on the Net. We are called to
continue the missionary action of making the Gospel known to all peoples
on the Net even despite the risk of harsh rejection and in the face of written
hostile attacks and name-calling. We wil experience the same experiences
St. Paul mentions in his letters while doing his missionary work to the
Gentile world.
An important dimension in the process of PneumaNetics is holiness. Mission
and holiness go together. The fruit of effective missionary work is a holiness
meant for the Christian faithful. By the process of inculturating the Gospel
message in the Internet language of the people, Catholics who work on the Net
are called to that universal vocation to holiness that is not only meant for
the forum of the physical world but also for this new forum and areopagus
called the Internet. In fact, the quality of holiness that is often produced
in this type of forum is one that is deeply contemplative since a great
amount of solitude and isolation is required of it in this forum of bringing
the gospel to the people on the Net. The holiness God gifts through using
the Net as a medium of proclaiming the Gospel flows over into our Christian
life in the physical world: in our marriages, in our families, in our
places of work, in our communities, and in our parishes. If we also learn
to live a Eucharistic spirituality, then this will also flow not only to
our work on the Net but also to the secular realities we find ourselves in:
family life and professional work.
PneumaNetics is still something new. As the gospel states, "new wine must
be put into fresh wineskins". Time will be its judge if it will truly support
and contribute to the building and strengthening of our Church and its
institutions. The process needs to be purified and to be continually
refined. It must be judged in the context our Judaeo-Christian tradition.
For the moment, it is best to continue in this journey by applying already
what has been started: prayer, study and Internet work. May we ask those
of you who have read this far to pray for this mission that it may be
guided by the Holy Spirit and be faithful to the teachings of the Church
as regards the use of this new social communications media of the Internet.
