Faith and technology
For a Catholic webauthor, to make his Catholic website really visible and
important in the Internet, he must not only have a great grasp of his
theology and spirituality; he must also know certain means that are very
technological in nature. This has to do with the very structure of his
webpages - which means all the text, graphics, and all the technology that
go with using the basic language of the Web, HTML. Granted that the Catholic
webauthor knows both his faith and his HTML well, all he needs to do is to
integrate the two in such a way as to make clear to the readers and visitors
to his website, that the website he is navigating through is essentially
Catholic.
When we speak of Catholic - its meaning and all the associations that go
with its universal elements - we should always see its reality through a
wide spectrum - like the light shining through a prism and producing many
colors that present themselves upon the ground. Catholicism spans a variety
of theologies and spiritualities. When navigating through a Catholic site,
one should ask oneself: "Is this site pre-Vatican II, Vatican II, or an
intuition of a theology after Vatican II? Also, one should ask: "Is this
site meant for clergy, religious, lay or any member or non-member of the
Church?" "Is this site clerically-authored, religious-authored, or
lay-authored?" These are the matters and contents of faith that a Catholic
webauthor has to consider when producing his own Catholic website.
After the webauthor gets all his contents and articles in order for the
website, then the next thing is to optimize his website so that the search
engines will index them and place them in their directories. Optimization
of a website is a very detailed matter and process. It will not be tackled
here although it is very important and it is suggest that every Catholic
webauthor go through a training or take a class that deals with search
engine optimization. If he also follows the call of the Pope John Paul II
to "go out into the deep of the Internet - duc in altum", then it can be
really ascertained that he will find all the resources needed to pursue
this calling, vocation and mission.
The personal vocation of a Catholic webauthor follows the traditional
faith-journey of all who are called by Christ. First, he becomes aware of
the life-situation he is in. Second, Christ enters his life and calls the
person to Himself. Third, the person responds and makes a leap of faith to
follow Christ. Fourth, the person learns who Christ is and what He stands
for. Fifth, the person is commissioned to journey like Christ and bring
the gospel message to all peoples of all nations. Sixth, the person
experiences the joys and sufferings of being on mission. And last, the
person commits himself to persevere to the end and be faithful in his
love for God. This seven-step faith-journey is what a Catholic webauthor
goes through and experiences in two forums: (1) the forum of the external
world of people and things; (2) and the internal forum of the
electronically-mediated world of the Internet - cyberspace. Whereas
before, mission meant only as a kind of going out into a long sea-voyage
in a medieval galleon to the undiscovered lands of the Americas or in
present-day context - attending to those stricken with AIDS in Africa;
today, with the new areopagus of the Internet, mission takes on a different
form, language and context.
Whatever context the Catholic webauthor finds himself; whether it be in
the external and physical world or in cyberspace - the classic elements of
the Catholic faith are still top priority. This means obedience to the
teachings of the Church magisterium, respect for Tradition, and knowledge
of Scripture. Inculturating Catholic faith into the language of the
Internet is a new thing. Many guidelines are already being released to
help those who feel called to spread the Gospel through the Internet.
These guidelines plus a lot of serious prayer, meditation and contemplation,
is necessary if one is to follow all those who walked the road to follow
Jesus in Christian excellence.

More on PageRank
As everyone is probably aware of, Google's PageRank system
is used to show the importance of a website on the World
Wide Web.
The PageRank system, in short, is basically Google's system
of a 1-10 scale that measures a website's importance. Google
does not give all the parameters by which it measures the
PageRank of a webpage. However, it does give an importance
to inbound links that flow into the webpage. Other than that,
there are countless other factors that go into their rating
of a webpage's PageRank. One important thing to remember
though is that even though PageRank may give the webpage
a certain degree of importance, the website owner is also
called to look into other aspects of the quality of his website
that he may be able attain all the goals and objectives of
his venture into the Internet.
If PageRank gets your attention and you want to work for
it, then the best way to attain a good PageRank is keep on
optimizing your website in the right way. In this manner,
whatever PageRank you achieve will remain stable over a
long period of time. And as you continue to optimize your
website for the search engines, eventually your PageRank
will rank one degree higher when the next updating comes.
It will entail a lot of hard work but the fruit and produce
of such work is fulfilling. A higher PageRank usually
positions your webpage higher in the search engine results
pages than those with lower PageRank (though this is not
always the case since there are so much more parameters
that go with the PageRank system). As your webpage makes
it to the top ten of many internet niches, we will have
achieved our goal to make the Catholic faith prominent
also in the Internet. And as visitors and readers go
through your webpages, they will come upon first contact
with the Gospel and get more knowledge on the person
of Christ.
