Lectionary Readings for the 4th Sunday of Advent, Year A

Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel

Reading I, Is 7, 10-14

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
The virgin will conceive.

The Lord spoke to Ahaz: Ask for a sign from the Lord, your
God; let it be deep as the nether world, or high as the
sky! But Ahaz answered, "I will not ask! I will not tempt
the Lord!" Then he said: Listen, O house of David! Is it not
enough for you to weary men, must you also weary my God?
Therefore the Lord himself will give you this sign: the
virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and shall name
him Immanuel.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 24, 1-2. 3-4. 5-6. R. vv. 7, 10

R. Let the Lord enter; he is king of glory.

1. The Lord's are the earth and its fullness;
the world and those who dwell in it.
For he founded it upon the seas
and established it upon the rivers. R.

2. Who can ascend the mountain of the Lord?
or who may stand in his holy place?
He whose hands are sinless, whose heart is clean,
who desires not what is vain. R.

3. He shall receive a blessing from the Lord
a reward from God his savior.
Such is the race that seeks for him,
that seeks the face of the God of Jacob. R.

Reading II, Rom 1, 1-7

The Beginning of the Letter of Paul to the Romans
Jesus Christ, a descendant of David, is the Son
of God.

Greetings from Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called
to be an apostle and set apart to proclaim the gospel of
God which he promised long ago through his prophets, as
the holy Scriptures record - the gospel concerning his
Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh
but was made Son of God in power, according to the spirit
of holiness, by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus
Christ our Lord. Through him we have been favored with
apostleship, that we may spread his name and bring to
obedient faith all the Gentiles, among whom are you who
have been called to belong to Jesus Christ.

To all in Rome, beloved of God and called to holiness,
grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus
Christ.

The Word of the Lord.

Gospel, Mt 1, 18-24

Alleluia Mt 1, 23
R. Alleluia. A virgin will give birth to
a son; his name will be Emmanuel: God is with us. R. Alleluia.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Matthew
Jesus was born of Mary who was bethrothed to Joseph
a relative of David.

This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about. When
his mother Mary was engaged to Joseph, but before they
lived together, she was found with child through the
power of the Holy Spirit. Joseph her husband, an upright
man unwilling to expose her to the law, decided to divorce
her quietly. Such was his intention when suddenly the
angel of the Lord appeared in a dream and said to him:
"Joseph, son of David, have no fear about taking Mary as
your wife. It is by the Holy Spirit that she has conceived
this child. She is to have a son and you are to name him
Jesus because he will save his people from their sins."
All this happened to fulfill what the Lord had said
through the prophet:

"The virgin shall be with child
and give birth to a son,
and they shall call him Emmanuel,"

a name which means "God is with us." When Joseph awoke
he did as the angel of the Lord had directed him and
received her into his home as his wife.

The Gospel of the Lord.
