Lectionary Readings for the 2nd Sunday of Lent, Year A

Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel

Reading I, Gn 12, 1-4

A Reading from the Book of Genesis
The call of Abraham, the father of God's people.

The Lord said to Abram: "Go forth from the land of your
kinsfolk and from your father's house to a land that
I will show you.

"I will make of you a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
so that you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you
and curse those who curse you.
All the communities of the earth
shall find blessing in you."

Abram went as the Lord directed him, and Lot went with
him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left
Haran.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 33, 4-5. 18-19. 20. 22. R. v. 22

R. Lord, let your mercy be on us,
as we place our trust in you.

1. Upright is the word of the Lord,
and all his works are trustworthy.
He loves justice and right;
of the kindness of the Lord the earth is full. R.

2. See, the eyes of the Lord are upon
those who fear him,
upon those who hope for his kindness,
to deliver them from death
and preserve them in spite of famine. R.

3. Our soul waits for the Lord,
who is our help and our shield.
May your kindness, O Lord, be upon us
who have put our hope in you. R.

Reading II, 2 Tm 1, 8-10

A Reading From the Second Letter of Paul to Timothy
God has saved us and called us to be holy.

Bear your share of the hardship which the gospel entails.

God has saved us and has called us to a holy life, not
because of any merit of ours but according to his own
design - the grace held out to us in Christ Jesus before
the world began but now made manifest through the appearance
of our Savior. He has robbed death of its power and has
brought life and immortality into clear light through the
gospel.

The Word of the Lord.

Gospel, Mt 17, 1-9

Verse before the Gospel
R. From the shining cloud the Father's
voice is heard: this is my beloved Son, hear
him.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Matthew
His face shone like the sun.

Jesus took Peter, James, and his brother John and
led them up on a high mountain by themselves. He
was transfigured before their eyes. His face became
as dazzling as the sun, his clothes as radiant as
light. Suddenly Moses and Elijah appeared to them
conversing with him. Upon this, Peter said to Jesus,
"Lord, how good it is for us to be here! With your
permission I will erect three booths here, one for
you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." He was still
speaking when suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed
them. Out of the cloud came a voice which said, "This
is my beloved Son on whom my favor rests. Listen to
him." When they heard this the disciples fell forward
and laying his hand on them, said, "Get up! Do not
be afraid." When they looked up they did not see
anyone but Jesus.

As they were coming down the mountainside Jesus
commanded them, "Do not tell anyone of the vision
until the Son of Man rises from the dead."

The Gospel of the Lord.
