Lectionary Readings for the 2nd Sunday of the Year, Year A
Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel
Reading I, Is 49, 3. 5-6A Reading from the Book of the Prophet IsaiahI will make you the light of the nations so that my salvation may reach to the end of the earth. The Lord said to me: you are my servant, Israel, through whom I show my glory. Now the Lord has spoken who formed me as his servant from the womb, that Jacob may be brought back to him and Israel gathered to him; and I am made glorious in the sight of the Lord, and my God is now my strength! It is too little, he says, for you to be my servant, to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and restore the survivors of Israel; I will make you a light to the nations, that my salvation may reach to the ends of the earth. The Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm, Ps 40, 2. 4. 7-8. 8-9. 10. R. vv. 8, 9R. Here am I, Lord; I come to do your will.1. I have waited, waited for the Lord, and he stooped toward me, and heard my cry. And he put a new song into my mouth, a hymn to our God. R. 2. Sacrifice or oblation you wished not, but ears open to obedience you gave me. Holocausts or sin-offerings you sought not; then said I, "Behold I come." R. 3. "In the written scroll it is prescribed for me: to do your will, O my God, is my delight, and your law is within my heart!" R. 4. I announced your justice in the vast assembly; I did not restrain my lips, as you, O Lord, know. R. Reading II, 1 Cor 1, 1-3The Beginning of the First Letter of Paul to the CorinthiansThe grace and peace of God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Paul, called by God's will to be an apostle of Christ Jesus, and Sosthenes our brother, send greetings to the church of God which is in Corinth; to you who have been consecrated in Christ Jesus and called to be a holy people, as to all those who, wherever they may be, call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, their Lord and ours. Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. The Word of the Lord. Gospel, Jn 1, 29-34
Alleluia Mt 11, 25
R. Alleluia. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones the mysteries of the kingdom. R. Alleluia. A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to John This is the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. When John caught sight of Jesus coming toward him, he exclaimed: "Look there! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! It is he of whom I said: 'After me is to come a man who ranks ahead of me, because he was before me.' I confess I did not recognize him, though the very reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel." John gave this testimony also: "I saw the Spirit descend like a dove from the sky, and it came to rest on him. But, as I say, I did not recognize him. The one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'When you see the Spirit descend and rest on someone, it is he who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit.' Now I have seen for myself and have testified, 'This is God's chosen One.'" The Gospel of the Lord.
