Lectionary Readings for the 15th Sunday of the Year, Year C

Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel

Reading I, Dt 30, 10-14

A Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy
Let the instruction of the Lord God be near you.

Moses said to the people: "If only you heed the voice of the Lord,
your God, and keep his commandments and statutes that are written
in this book of the law, you will return to the Lord, your God, with
all your heart and all your soul.

"For this command which I enjoin on you today is not too mysterious
and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say,
'Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that
we may carry it out?' Nor is it accross the sea, that you should say,
'Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we
may carry it out?' No, it is something very near to you, already in
your mouths and in your hearts; you have only to carry it out."

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 69, 14. 17. 30-31. 33-34. 36. 37. R. v. 33

R. Turn to the Lord in your need, and you will live.

1. I pray to you, O Lord,
for the time of your favor, O God!
In your great kindness answer me
with your constant help.
Answer me, O Lord, for bounteous is your kindness:
in your great mercy turn toward me. R.

2. I am afflicted and in pain;
let your saving help, O God, protect me.
I will praise the name of God in song,
and I will glorify him with thanksgiving. R.

3. "See, you lowly ones, and be glad;
you who seek God may your hearts be merry!
For the Lord hears to the poor,
and his own who are in bonds he spuns us not." R.

4. For God will save Zion
and rebuild the cities of Judah.
The descendants of his servants shall inherit it,
and those who love his name shall inhabit it. R.

Reading II, Col 1, 15-20

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Colossians
In him were created all things.

Christ Jesus is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of
of all creatures. In him everything in heaven and on earth was
created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominations,
principalities or powers; all were created through him, and for him.
He is before all else that is. In him everything continues in being.
It is he who is head of the body, the church; he who is the beginning.
the first-born of the dead, so that primacy may be his in everything.
It pleased God to make absolute fullness reside in him and, by means
of him, to reconcile everything in his person, everything, I say, both
on earth and in the heavens, making peace through the blood of his cross.

The Word of the Lord.

Gospel, Lk 10, 25-37

Alleluia Mt 11, 25
R. Alleluia. Blessed are you, Father, Lord of
of heaven and earth; you have revealed to little ones
the mysteries of the kingdom. R. Alleluia.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Luke
Who is my neighbor?

On one occasion a lawyer stood up to pose this problem to
Jesus: "Teacher, what must I do to inherit everlasting life?"
Jesus answered him: "What is written in the law? How do you
read it?" He replied:

'You shall love the Lord your God
with all your heart,
with all your soul,
with all your strength,
with all your mind;
and your neighbor as yourself."

Jesus said, "You have answered correctly. Do this and you shall
live." But because he wished to justify himself he said to Jesus,
"And who is my neighbor?" Jesus replied: "There was a man going down
from Jerusalem to Jericho who fell in with robbers. They stripped him,
beat him, and then went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened
to be going down the same road; he saw him but continued on. Likewise
there was a Levite who came the same way; he saw him and went on. But a
Samaritan who was journeying along came on him and was moved to pity
at the sight. He approached him and dressed his wounds, pouring in oil
and wine as a means to heal. He then hoisted him on his own beast and
brought him to an inn, where he cared for him. The next day he took out
two silver pieces and gave them to the innkeeper with the request: 'Look
after him, and if there is any further expense I will repay you on my way
back.'

"Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the man who fell
in with the robbers?" The answer came, "The one who treated him with
compassion." Jesus said to him, "Then go and do the same."
