Lectionary Readings for the 13th Sunday of the Year, Year C

Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel

Reading I, 1 Kgs 19, 16. 19-21

A Reading from the First Book of Kings
Elisha rose and followed Elijah and became his servant.

The Lord said to Elijah: "You shall anoint Elisha, son of
Shaphat of Abel-meholah, as prophet to succeed you."

Elijah set out, and came upon Elisha, son of Shaphat, as he
was plowing with twelve yoke of oxen; he was following the
twelfth. Elijah went over to him and threw his cloak over him.
Elisha left the oxen, ran after Elijah, and said, "Please, let
me kiss my father and mother goodbye, and I will follow you."
"Go back!" Elijah answered. "Have I done anything to you?"
Elisha left him and, taking the yoke of oxen, slaughtered them;
he used the plowing equipment for fuel to boil their flesh, and
gave it to his people to eat. Then he left and followed Elijah
as his attendant.

The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 16, 1-2. 5. 7-8. 9-10. 11. R. v. 5

R. You are my inheritance, O Lord.

1. Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the Lord, "My Lord are you."
O Lord, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot. R.

2. I bless the Lord who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the Lord ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed. R.

3. Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption. R.

4. You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever. R.

Reading II, Gal 5, 1. 13-18

A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Galatians
My brothers, you were called to freedom.

It was for liberty that Christ freed us. So stand firm, and
do not take on yourselves the yoke of slavery a second time!

My brothers, remember that you have been called to live in
freedom - but not a freedom that gives free rein to the flesh.
Out of love, place yourselves at one another's service. The
whole law has found its fulfillment in this one saying: "You
shall love your neighbor as yourself." If you go on biting
and tearing one another to pieces, take care! You will end
up in mutual destruction!

My point is that you should live in accord with the spirit
and you will not yield to the cravings of the flesh. The
flesh lusts against the spirit and the spirit against the
flesh; the two are directly opposed. This is why you do not
do what your will intends. If you are guided by the spirit,
you are not under the law.

The Word of the Lord.

Gospel, Lk 9, 51-62

Alleluia cf. Eph 1, 17-18
R. Alleluia. May the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ
enlighten the eyes of our heart that we might see how
great is the hope to which we are called. R. Alleluia.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel According to Luke
Jesus resolutely set his face toward Jerusalem. I
will follow you wherever you go.

As the time approached when Jesus was to be taken from
this world, he firmly resolved to proceed toward Jerusalem,
and sent messengers on ahead of him. These entered a
Samaritan town to prepare for his passing through, but
the Samaritans would not welcome him because he was on his
way to Jerusalem. When his disciples James and John saw
this, they said, "Lord, would you not have us call down
fire from heaven to destroy them?" He turned toward them
only to reprimand them. Then they set off for another town.

As they were making their way along, someone said to him,
"I will be your follower wherever you go." Jesus said to him,
"The foxes have lairs, the birds of the sky have nests, but
the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head." To another he
said, "Come after me." The man replied, "Let me bury my
father first." Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their
dead; come away and proclaim the kingdom of God." Yet another
said to him, "I will be your follower, Lord, but first let
me take leave of my people at home." Jesus answered him,
"Whoever puts his hand to the plow but keeps looking back
is unfit for the reign of God."
