Lectionary Readings for the 5th Sunday of Easter Year A

Readings, Responsorial Psalm and Gospel

Reading I, Isaiah 58, 7-10

A Reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Your light will shine like the dawn.

Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless; Clothe the naked when you see them, and do not turn your back on your own. Then your light shall break forth like the dawn, and your wound shall quickly be healed; Your vindication shall go before you, and the glory of the Lord shall be your rear guard. Then you shall call, and the Lord will answer, you shall cry for help, and he will say: Here I am! If you remove from your midst oppression, false accusation and malicious speech; If you bestow your bread on the hungry and satisfy the afflicted; Then light shall rise for you in the darkness, and the gloom shall become for you like the midday.
The Word of the Lord.

Responsorial Psalm, Ps 112, 4-5. 6-7. 8-9. R. v. 4

R. The just man is a light in darkness to the upright.

Alternative R. Alleluia.

1. The Lord dawns through the darkness,
a light for the upright;
Well for the man who is gracious and lends,
who conducts his affairs with justice. R.

2. He shall never be moved;
the just man shall be in everlasting remembrance.
An evil report he shall not fear;
his heart is firm, trusting in the Lord. R.

3. His heart is steadfast; he shall not fear.
Lavishly he gives to the poor;
His generosity shall endure forever;
his horn shall be exalted in glory. R.

Reading II, 1 Cor 2, 1-5

A Reading from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians
I have told you of the witness of the crucified Christ.

As for myself, brothers, when I came to you I did not come proclaiming God's testimony with any particular eloquence or "wisdom." No, I determined that while I was with you I would speak of nothing but Jesus Christ and him crucified. When I came among you it was in weakness and fear, and with much trepidation. My message and my preaching had none of the persuasive force of "wise" argumentation, but the convincing power of the Spirit. As a consequence, your faith rests not on the wisdom of men but on the power of God.
The Word of the Lord.

Gospel, Mt 5, 13-16

A Reading from the Holy Gospel, According to Matthew
You are the light of the world.

Jesus said to his disciples: "You are the salt of the earth. But what if salt goes flat? How can you restore its flavor? Then it is good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot." "You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Men do not light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket. They set it on a stand where it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, your light must shine before men so that they may see goodness in your acts and give praise to your heavenly Father."
The gospel of the Lord.
