Catholic Theology Articles Index of the major theology articles and content Introduction to Catholic theology:Theology as a discipline means "faith seeking understanding". It is a systematic way of understanding our Catholic faith through four major areas: systematic theology, Scriptures, moral theology, and sacramental theology. Systematic theology includes specifically ecclesiology (the theology of the Church), Christology (theology on the person and divinity of Christ), theological anthropology (theology of grace), and fundamental theology (basic theological framework in which all current theology is based). The other three areas of theology simply speak on the Scriptures, Catholic ethics (moral theology), and the sacraments. Though these theological terms may be new to some, they really just speak of the simple faith realities about the Church, Jesus, God's grace, Scriptures, ethics, and the 7 sacraments.Fundamental theology in tradition:The tradition of Catholic theology has two types: a "theology from above" and a "theology from below". The "theology from above" has its sources in the scholastic philosophy and theology of the great St. Thomas Aquinas. This theology understands the faith from realities unseen - as the angels, purgatory, limbo, heaven, hell, Church triumphant, Church suffering and many others. On the other hand, theology from below starts and begins its theological reflections on human experiences - the family, the cultural sphere, the soccio-economic sphere, and the political sphere, with a special focus on the situation of the poor and the marginalized sectors of world society. Both ways of doing theology are part of the tradition of the Church. The Catholic theology articles in this website will have both ways of understanding theology: the theology from above and the theology from below (since this was the theology this webauthor was trained in). However, since the Catholic spirituality this webauthor was formed in, came from a religious congregation that was founded by a priest born in 1716, then the Catholic spirituality articles in this web site will have its special context in this. The challenge for us contemporary Catholics is to integrate both these theologies in a way that our practice of the faith will be combine the two: in our prayer and in our action.
