The Value of Small Things
Taken for granted
In life, it is but normal to take the small things
for granted. This is natural as they do not seem
to stand out, their very size makes them almost unseen,
and their value is usually commensurate to its size.
But, when seen from a certain perspective and context,
a small thing can mean a lot. Those involved in
customer service know this very much. They look at
the smallest details so that their client or customer
does not feel neglected, or their feelings hurt, or
may experience offense from a careless remark about
them. When customer relations management is carefully
taken care of, then customers will be satisfied and
happy - especially if their “little” needs are taken
care of.
A thousand pennies is still a thousand pennies
Pennies are small amount of coins. And a thousand
pennies, even though they may be a thousand, will
still remain pennies. But this is because we look
at them from the context only of pennies. Imagine if
a person has $999,999.99 in amount of pennies. If
we continue with our thinking as with the thousand
pennies, then we will also say that though $999,999.99
is big, it is still worth the same amount in pennies.
This is because we look at the value from only a
material point of view. But if we balance our
perception, if we broaden our understanding, and
if we look at the whole piece of paper rather than
the ink blot, then we will see something different:
it lights up our way of looking at the $999,999.99
pennies. When we add that one penny that will make it
a million dollars, then that will spell a much big
difference in value.
A Catholic articles web site is like one penny
A Catholic articles web site or web log is like one
penny. But if it is the penny that will make the
Catholic faith worth a million dollars “in a spiritual
sense” - meaning of monumental value, then that one penny
will be vitally important. So, small things mean a
lot. And this is what St. Therese of Lisieux always
reminds us with her way of life: every little thing
she does, she does with great love. Translated in
a material sense, every penny we pick up and save
will be the penny that will make the Catholic faith
worth more than “$999,999.99 in just pennies”. So
don’t underestimate the value of a penny. And don’t
take for granted and underestimate the value of a
Catholic articles web site or web log. That just might
be the “penny” that will make the world of the internet
a world of peace - the peace that John Paul II has been
in mission for during his whole pontificate.

Learning From One’s Mistakes in Web Site Development
Developing a Successful Catholic Web Site is a Process of
Correcting Errors and Learning
Web development since 2004
When our web site was referred to Judy Walker and her
network of classes in SEO Techniques, we did not know
anything about web site development. In fact, enrolling
our web site at S.R. Emerson’s HTML classes elicited only
many error issues found primarily in our home page - the
index.html page. It took a lot of trial and error moves
in order to get the right coding done and to clean up
the code in such a way as to make it load faster in the
web browsers. It was also difficult on our part to just
remove links from our link partners at the home page
because we would not want to break the link relationship
with them.
Breakthrough through WordPress
OUr home page had this issue for many years and we did
not want to spend any further in terms of hiring SEO
professionals or web design masters. What helped us
solve our basic issue with the home page was the idea
that our Yahoo! Web Hosting starter package gave us:
the idea of having a blog’s index.php as your home page.
We thought of this very carefully and we wanted also
our loyal subscribers to have a choice between using
this new home page and the original one. We actually
followed the move made by Yahoo! when they introduced
a new format for their email and their My Yahoo! page.
WordPress solved many issues
Since Yahoo! Web Hosting gives its subscribers the
opportunity to make a blog its home page, then we took
this opportunity and created a WordPress web log to
act as our “front home page”. It solved these issues:
web design was made simpler through a template provided
by WordPress; the simpler design also made it easier
for pages to load in many browsers; [the idea of the
Zenit format - wherein titles are presented first in
a list and then when clicked leads to a paragraph that
details the item - also helped a lot]; and most of all,
with this WordPress template, we are assured of a format
that would be easily accorded a standard rating by the
web consortium.
Much more still needed to be corrected
A lot of pages in the web site are still in need of
much correction. We also found out that when a link
is broken and then you copy this broken link unknowingly
to other pages of your articles or blog posts, then it
will register as a page not found in the browser of
your readers. This is why it is needed to be very
careful when creating and developing web pages. One
broken link can lead to many, many pages containing
that broken link. It would be hard to detail all of
those pages - especially if they are too numerous to
correct - but something can be done in order to help
one’s readers and visitors with finding the information
they need from your site. And this can be solved by
creating a very good 404 not found error page.
If success is a journey, then learning is one
assurance that we shall reach our destination
We may be speaking only of web development and in
correcting the errors we find in our coding and in
our pages, but when we are faced with an obstacle,
or with a problem, or with a dilemma, or with an
“error” message that really tests our patience,
then all we need to do is to be open to learning.
Openness to learn from situations such as the ones
enumerated above will give us the assurance of
success - just as faith gives us the assurance of
things unseen.

Catholic Windows on the World
A blog that seeks to propagate the Catholic presence on
the Net by linking Catholic sites and blogs in an expanding
and progressive network.
The story of Catholic Internet Mission
The Catholic Internet Mission or (CIM) web site was not
really planned. What was originally intended was to create
a Yahoo! list with Catholic members. However, social
interactivity on the Net and in the physical world led to
the list’s growth to include web logs, web rings, and a
web site - all of which are on free accounts.
Growth of the network through John Paul’s spirit
Even though the CIM web site was not planned, there was
however a driving spirit behind the founding of everything
within the CIM network. That driving spirit was the
encouraging words of John Paul II in his many documents
on the internet. Through John Paul II’s spirituality
of mission and holiness, this spirit was translated and
concretized through the CIM web site and its network -
eventually naming it informally a “webnetwork” - a
mishmash of web pages all centralized through Catholic
Internet Mission.
Learning the ropes; standardization
Through SEO standardization, the CIM web site was able to
enter into the mainstream of the internet. Being in the
mainstream of the internet is not easy as traffic and
visitor flow to the web site is as “volatile” as the
stock market! The only stable element that kept the
CIM web site afloat was its vision and non-profit motive
to love God, the Church, and the Catholic faith in which
many people put their trust, their confidence, their
very lives on. If we were working for just the money
alone then our CIM web site and the network in which
it is contextualized would have folded up easily. So,
despite the ups and downs of visitor traffic, sticking
to our vision and mission and keeping to our “knitting”,
helped a lot to withstand the highly competitive and
fast upgrading pressures of the internet world.
We need your help and support
Ours is a growing, developing, and progressing network.
However, we also need your support and your help. The
help and support that you can give is to simply join
our mission and our network: get a Yahoo! Web Hosting
account through us, and build with us “Catholic Windows
on the World” - which will all help evangelize peoples
of all cultures on the Net - peoples who may have not
have had the opportunity to initially encounter the
Catholic message in the internet medium. Your modest
and humble support is already very vital and important
to us - as we also are a modest and humble Catholic
enterprising mission comprised of extended Catholic
family members.
