Last week’s post gives two encouraging news from
Zenit: one on the encouragement to the youth and
another on the 3rd assembly for the unity of the
Christian Churches in Sibiu, Romania. There was
also a feature again on Mother Teresa and her
biographical data and life history. Then there
is a book review on The Doctors of the Church by
J. Fink. Then the regular Lectionary Readings for
the 23rd Sunday of the Year C was given. To review

This week’s post gives two news clips from Zenit
news: one on the gathering of the Brothers of
Mount Carmel for their general chapter and the
second on the message of Pope Benedict XVI to
the people at St. Stephen’s Cathedral in Austria
on the importance of valuing the Sunday Mass as
an “inner necessity”. There is also an article
on the Rule of St. Albert - a rule given to the
first “Carmelites” who lived as hermits, mendicants,
and pilgrims on Mount Carmel in the 13th century.
Finally, there are two pages dedicated to books,
music and films of various topics and themes:
on classical music, on St. Edith Stein, on the
Blessed Virgin Mary, on John Paul II, and more.

Carmelite Brothers Gather
The Brothers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount
Carmel are gathered for their general chapter in Rome
through Sept. 22. Their general chapter marks the 800th
anniversary of the approval of the Rule of St. Albert
of Jerusalem. This group of brothers have their origin
from a group of men [Latin hermits] who left “everything
to live in reverence of Jesus Christ, imitating the
sublime examples of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the
prophet Elijah.” The practice of their spirituality
is a ’school’ of prayer for many - especially the
lay faithful - who are called to meet with Christ in
prayer not only to implore His help but also to place
themselves at the presence of God to give Him thanks,
praise, and adoration. Their school of prayer helps
many to learn the art of contemplation, listening and
ardent devotion that leads to a life of love in God.
Rule of St. Albert
St. Brocard and companions at Mount Carmel received
from St. Albert of Jerusalem, patriarch of Jerusalem,
a rule of life for their community in the 13th century.
This rule of life is distinct from the three other
existing rules of life: from St. Benedict, St. Basil,
and St. Augustine. The ideal of this rule of life is
embedded in the Introduction of the Rule and the spirit
of the Rule is in continuity with the spirit of the
Bible, the great traditions of religious life, and
the Fathers of the Church. Originally written like
the New Testament letters, the Rule has come down
through the centuries and is now existing in an
organized body of text: with an Introduction, 18 short
chapters and a conclusion. This article gives the
Introduction in its original form and then makes
a short outline of 18 chapters into sections with
a description of each section.
Sunday Mass as an “Inner Need”
Sunday is often reserved by many for leisure and
free time. The pontiff states that Mass on a
Sunday is a call to all to discover it as an “inner
necessity”. Given a lot of leisure and free time
on Sunday, if we see to it that we go to Mass, then
our leisure and free time will obtain for us an inner
focus, an overall sense of direction, and ultimately
will strengthen and build us up as a Catholic family.
The pontiff centered this point when he mentions the
early Christian martyrs of Abitene who said: “Without
Sunday we cannot live”. This statement of the pontiff
was given in St. Stephen’s Cathedral on his three-day
apostolic trip to Vienna, Austria.
What It Takes to Be a Site Owner
On the spiritual side, which is very important as
in the case of a Catholic web site, there are three
things that can truly help in making our web site
or web log a success: faith, determination and dreams.
The combination of these three, even with just the size
of a “mustard seed”, will help grow and strengthen us
as web site owners, and also the venture we have
embarked on, so that it will survive the startup phase
and move on to grow in the long-term. Faith in God
moves us; determination moves us despite the hardships
or the costs involved; and dreams re-enkindle the
fire of love for God and our family and this mission
to proclaim the gospel and propagate the Catholic faith
on the Net.
Lectionary: 24th Sunday Year C
The lectionary readings for the 24th Sunday of the Year
are taken from the book of Exodus, the letter of Paul
to Timothy, and the gospel of Luke. In the book of
Exodus, we see how the Lord wanted to punish His people
Israel when they created a molten calf and worshiped
it, but soon relented when Moses implored the Lord.
Then in the letter of Paul to Timothy, Paul speaks
about Jesus as a Savior - One who came to save all
sinners. Finally, the gospel of Luke, Jesus speaks
about God’s love for those who have gone astray, This
the gospel teaches through the parable of the lost
sheep and the lost coin.
Finding Inspiration in Music
A scientific study was made on the effect of classical
music on plants. When classical music was played before
plants, the plants thrived and their flowers blossomed.
This is how positive and creative the influence of
classical music have on living things. For those of
us who need a lot of inspiration to write our Catholic
articles and web logs, classical music can help a great
deal on this regard. The page which this item links to
features two classical productions: “The Athens 2004
Album: Classical” and the “Number One Classical Album”.
These productions feature truly classic songs and
music that uplift the soul and inspires it to reach
to greater heights. Specially featured in the “Number
One Classical Album” is the late Luciano Pavarotti -
a famous tenor whose powerful voice brings music to
its classic greatness. The two CDs on this page can
help one find the songs that can help generate ideas
and inspire one to be creative in his approach to
building a web site.
DVDs, Films and Music
Featured on this page are books, films, and music on
a variety of topics and themes. To mention some,
there is: “Way to Christ”, a book written by the
pope when he was still a bishop and cardinal; “The
Jeweller’s Shop”, a film based on Pope John Paul
II’s work and which features Burt Lancaster, Ben
Cross and Olivia Hussey; and music on the Blessed
Mother entitled, “Ave Maria” and “Cantate Maria”.
